Losartan is a generic form of a brand drug called Cozaar which belongs to a group of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists (ARB). The medication prevents blood vessels from narrowing, and thus allows lowering, stabilizing blood pressure and improving blood flow.

Brand-name and generic versions of Cozaar are available on the market. Brand Cozaar is manufactured by Merck & Co. The generic form of Cozaar is produced in three strengths mostly by Teva Pharmaceuticals and other companies. FDA has placed the generic Cozaar under AB rating, considering it to be equivalent to the brand-name product.

Cozaar (containing losartan potassium) is a prescription medication indicated to treat hypertension, lower the risk of stroke and slow the kidney damage and prevent diabetic nephropathy in diabetics.

Cozaar works by restraining angiotensin II receptors. By decreasing the effects of angiotensin II, which constricts blood vessels, Cozaar helps blood vessels relax, and become narrower, thus lowers hypertension.

Generic Cozaar is available in the following strengths of tablets:

• Losartan 25 mg
• Losartan 50 mg
• Losartan 100 mg.

Generic Losartan has undergone different clinical tests to evaluate its effectiveness and safety and was assigned by FDA as an equivalent to the brand version Cozaar.

The main difference in chemical compounds between the brand and generic medications is different inactive ingredients. The basic active component Losartan presents in both generic and brand versions.

Before using generic Cozaar you should consult your doctor and inform him if you are allergic to losartan.

In case you suffer from any of these other conditions, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests:

• kidney disease;
• liver disease;

• congestive heart failure;
• an electrolyte imbalance;
• if you are dehydrated.

If you are pregnant do not use this medication. It could harm the unborn baby. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop using it and inform your doctor right away.

While being treated with this medication you need to check your blood pressure regularly. Keep using generic Cozaar even if you feel fine. Hypertension often may reveal no symptoms.

Generic Cozaar may cause serious side effects demanding medical attention:

• pain or burning when you urinate;
• pale skin, feeling light-headed or short of breath, rapid heart rate, trouble concentrating;
• wheezing, chest pain;
• irregular heart rate;
• weak pulse, muscle weakness, tingly feeling.

Other not so serious generic Cozaar adverse reactions may include:

• stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat, fever;
• dry cough;
• muscle cramps;
• pain in legs or back;
• stomach pain, diarrhea;
• headache, dizziness;
• tired feeling;
• insomnia.

Tell your doctor about all other medicines you use, they may interact with generic Losartan.

Store this medication away from heat and moisture. Keep away from children.
